On "Pitanga!" by John Potter (KTO)
Matsuda Mio has been called Japan's fado singer, as she sings mostly in Portuguese and has lived in Lisbon, where she learned her trade. On this second album, she has added some different musicians, and the recording was made in Brazil. There is much more than fado here, with a wide variety of styles, but most notable is her development as a songwriter. She has composed about half of the album, including the title track, and her sensitive delivery makes for a rewarding listen. Matsuda isn't just a novelty, she fully deserves the worldwide recognition she is starting to get.
